End Station transforms the entire lower level of the Foundation into an abandoned, ghost-like subway station. After crossing the existing grating and descending the metal staircase, viewers turn a corner to find themselves standing on the platform, looking at the tracks, benches and signage of a typical New York City subway station, but one that has been stopped in time. Incorporating subtle hints of a bygone era such as a 1980s poster or tags of graffiti, End Station toys with our memories of a former New York, one that is familiar but indefinable. In End Station, Elmgreen & Dragset continue to explore their interest in location and site specificity. The installation is appropriately situated in the Meatpacking District, which has its own ghosts and few remaining pieces of history.
Like much of their earlier work, End Station forces a re-examination of space and the typical expectations of walking into an art exhibition are completely altered. An environment developed for intellectual and aesthetic curiosity is now representative of the most public and utilitarian of spaces. As stated by Beatrix Ruf, in their work [Elmgreen & Dragset] formulate the presentation, presence and representation of structures as a stopping point, a break which offers an opportunity for redefinition or individualized definition of their use. Whats more, they prompt curiosity about the presence of the viewer. Someone was here, someone will be here; something was here, something will be here. (Kunsthalle Zurich, 2002).
Michael Elmgreen (Denmark) & Ingar Dragset (Norway) live in Berlin and have been working together since the mid-1990s. They have had numerous exhibitions around the world, including solo shows at the Tate Modern, London, the Fondazione Nicola Trussardi in Milan, Portikus in Frankfurt, and the Fundacion la Caixa in Barcelona. They have also participated in various biennials such as Venice, Sao Paulo and Berlin. This spring they are included in a group show at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago and have an installation at the Wrong Gallery in Chelsea. CoCo 144 & Ghost appear by special arrangement with Martinez Gallery End Station will be on view at the Bohen Foundation through July 1, 2005, and is open to the public Tuesday through Friday from 12 to 6 PM. For more information, please call 212.414.4575.
Each venue hosts its own independent mini-event. From the outrageous to the smart.
And don't miss
this special opening:
OpenGround and Galerie Scherer8 proudly present Williamsburg
Wedding, an organically initiated international exchange between artists
in Brooklyn and Berlin.
Late-night after-parties to follow at secret venues. Check with your favorite galleries for details.
For map and orientation, go directly to the Greeting Center at Spike Hill Bar and Grill, 184 Bedford Ave., directly across from the Bedford Stop on the L train. There, you will find information on all the galleries and locals on hand to point the way.
Williamsburg is five minutes by subway from Union Square. Seven, by taxi. New York's epicenter of emerging art explodes with new galleries every month. At 48 and counting, it has never been stronger.
This is the third annual After-Hours, an official Williamsburg Gallery Association event. Working to galvanize the diversity and vitality of this internationally recognized epicenter of emerging art, the Williamsburg Gallery Association (WGA) liaises with museums, artists, writers, and other galleries and organizations around the world. Founded in 2002 with 23 charter members, the WGA serves to promote the artists and programs of its members through advertising, public programs, and collaborative events that reach out both citywide and beyond. Membership is open to galleries located in the Brooklyn neighborhoods of Williamsburg and Greenpoint who are primarily dedicated to exhibiting contemporary art.
