  • Book Launch: Death in the Studio: Studio Death Snapshots by Hannes Priesch and Niki Lederer at Printed Matter, Inc., 535 West 22nd Street, 5-7 ( book is a colorful, grotesque, often hilarious collection of just about every type of death imaginable. Suicides, murders, accidents, and a range of metaphoric and conceptual deaths by gunshot, decapitation, hanging, wrist slitting, auto-erotic asphyxiation, and existential introspection fill the full-bleed color pages. The scenarios range from realistic crime scenes to full blown theatrical fantasies with the artists' work figuring prominently in many. These elaborate mises en scenes suggest that, while taboo in polite society, the death drive is alive and kicking in the privacy of artists' studios ñ and in the cultural imagination.)

  • Lynda Benglis: sculptures at the Bass Museum of Art,2121 Park Avenue, Miami Beach, Florida 33139,305.673.7530 bassmuseum.org An eminent sculptor and videomaker for more than three decades, Lynda Benglis produced a pioneering body of feminist video in the 1970s. Immediate and visceral, Benglis's video work confronts issues raised by feminist theory, including the representation of women, the role of the spectator, and female sexuality. Besides video, Benglis has experimented with printmaking, cast paper, painting, drawing, and ceramics. Her work has included labels such as expressionist, feminist, exhibitionist, pop, funk, minimalist, and post-minimalist. In these just completed works, which will be on view as part of the Bass Museumís Inside and Out sculpture series, Benglis explores metaphorical, biomorphic shapes. She is deeply concerned with the physicality of form and how it affects the viewer, and she uses a wide range of materials to render iconograhic impressions of mass and surface. Though essentially abstract, these sculptures simultaneously suggest an image of contemplation and physical power. Exhibition on view at the Bass Museum of Art December 4, 2003 -June 2004
