- Men With Balls: The Art
of the World Cup
curated by Simon Critchley (Prof. of Philosophy at the New School) with
curatorial
assistance from Erica F. Campbell,
Jessica Iannuzzi & Natasha Llorens w/ artists: Miguel
Calderon, Mark Leckey, Hellmuth Costard, Maria Marshall, Liam Gillick,
Santo Tolone, Douglas Gordon, Uri Tzaig & Philippe Parreno
Memorabilia from Roger Bennett Bill Shankly, Match results read
by Mark E. Smith. The FIFA World Cup
is the most important and widely watched sporting event in the world
and will run June 11 - July 11 in
South Africa. The germinal idea for
this exhibition is very simple: to create the perfect football
environment, a sort of mini-soccer paradise at apexart for watching
games. Around the games themselves, there will be talks, events, and a
series of works, objects, and activities that will expand the spectacle
into a more conceptual and sensual rumination on the meaning and
significance of football/soccer. The
World Cup is a spectacle in the strictly Situationist sense. It
is a shiny display of nations in symbolic,
atavistic
national
combat
adorned
with
multiple
layers
of
commodification,
sponsorship
and
the seemingly infinite
commercialization. It is an image
of
our
age
at
its
worst
and
most
gaudy. But
it
is also something more, something bound up with difficult and
recalcitrant questions of conflict, memory, history, place, social
class, masculinity, violence, national identity, tribe, and group.
The
hope
of
the
exhibition
Men With Balls is to
construct a
unique situation where these questions can be ruminated on
collectively. Football is
working-class ballet. It's an experience of enchantment.
For an hour and a half, a different order of time unfolds and one
submits oneself to it. A football game is a temporal rupture with the
routine of the everyday: ecstatic, evanescent, and, most importantly,
shared. The aim of the exhibition is to produce with this show some
experience of being together with others in a group, watching a game,
waiting for something marvelous, unexpected, and possibly magical to
happen. And it will happen.at apexart,

Gift, a group show
conceived by the prominent
Italian curator and
art critic Gaia Serena Simionati, consists of paintings, sculptures,
videos, sound installations, photos and works on paper from nine noted
contemporary artists from the Middle East and Africa. Dr. Simionati
believes that rather than dwelling on the theme of separation, the
language of art should communicate in ways that defy verbal, ethnic,
religious, gender and age barriers- Egypt: Hamdi Attia, Motaz

Naturae “Hatred is an underrated emotion. Operating with
the belief that the world is an unjust place polluted by ancient,
religious delusion and it isn't my job to decorate it, I made this show
to examine th
e
centuries
old
belief
in
the
Scala
Naturae
or
Great
Chain
of
Being.
In
its
various
permutations
it
is
one
of
the most pernicious of social
hierarchies and systems of religious belief, which ordered all living
things in a divine, regimented social order. Originating with Aristotle
it became codified within Christianity with angels and deity at the top
followed by a careful ranking of humans of various races, animals,
plant l ife and minerals at the bottom. It persisted throughout the
Enlightenment and early Lamarckian models of evolution before finally
being replaced by the Darwinian model of organizing living things based
on their physical not spiritual characteristics. A key facet of this
system of belief was the view that it must be static and unchanging and
that no part could be damaged or undermined or the entire chain would
break. In my small but sincere way I've attempted
to chip away at hierarchy by corrupting the tropes of religious art
like the Instruments of the Passion and the Hand of Fatima. By
depicting serraglios and harems as well as spiritualized masochism I'm
mocking Islamic and Christian fables. By depicting 60's hippies and
forms of natural purification like high colonics I'm mocking nature
worship. This show is intended as a malicious, anti-theistic attack on
social and natural order and prostration to higher powers and
collective identities as well as an examination of the clash of belief
systems and the anxiety underlying teleology and
classification. at Leo

- James
Hyde, “Stuart Davis Group,
Hyde picked up a heavy house-painting roller, coated it with the heavy
acrylic used by sign painters, and reworked photographic prints of
details of two works by the early American abstractionist Stuart
Davis.
The four resulting works push Davis’s 1939 and 1940 paintings
closer to
the hard-edge, geometric abstractions that he would venture into later
in his career at the
Boiler, the magisterial new Pierogi space, a towering,
old
boiler
room, just a short walk from McCarren
Park, a perfect place to throw-up

Lynton Wells, Rob Wynne, Dustin Yellin & Aaron Young, In recreating and detailing this private
living space in our public gallery, the exhibit seeks to create a more
immediate and intimate relationship between the viewer and the featured
artworks, to enhance the contemplation of the everyday unseen. We hope
to project the viewer into a more personal space where they are able to
sit at the kitchen table, watch TV from the couch, stretch out on the
bed – in short – where they can literally, make
themselves at home
